A Leader Committed to Africa’s Economic Development

Makhtar Diop has served as the Vice President of the World Bank for Africa since May 2012, a strategic role in which he has played a pivotal part in allocating $11.6 billion in 2015 to address the key development challenges of Sub-Saharan Africa. Under his leadership, the World Bank Group has strengthened its commitment to economic growth and poverty reduction in the region.

Previously, Makhtar Diop was the Country Director for Brazil from 2009 to 2012, overseeing the institution’s largest portfolio. From 2000 to 2001, he served as the Minister of Economy and Finance of Senegal. Between 1997 and 2000, he also worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund, specialising in issues related to Central Africa.

On December 3rd, 2015Makhtar Diop intervention shed light on the concrete actions being taken to address Africa’s economic challenges. His insights sparked an essential debate on the effectiveness of development aid and the role of international financial institutions in transforming the continent.
